Steam Engines of operational and preserved Paddle Steamers (see below for statically preserved engines)

Paddle steamers today include ships with triple expansion diagonal engines and also compound diagonal, fitted to older and smaller ships where the steam is used in two cylinders rather than three. Some ships have simple twin cylinder engines where the steam is used in both cylinders simultaneously before exhaustion. There remain examples of oscillating engines (some using, or converted to, compounding methods to use exhausted steam from the main cylinder to get additional work in a second cylinder). This technology was outdated by the end of the 19th century and survives only in the older vessels.
