InTramCities with Gordon Stewart

Enthusiasts have been drawn to Woltersdorf, a small town on the edge of Berlin for many years. The single-track line with passing places and a long run through densely forested land to connect with the Berlin S-Bahn station at Rahnsdorf has been a reminder of semi-rural tramways which have all but disappeared, but was also one of the last remaining strongholds of the once ubiquitous East German Gotha-built two-axle trams. The survival of the 5.6 km long line, opened in 1913, was recently in more doubt than usual but now appears to have a reasonably secure future. Financially an unwanted burden on the local authority (Landkreis Oder-Spree), this aspect of the tramway has received some security through integration with the nearby Schoneiche-Rudersdorf tramway which should help to share and reduce costs. Most importantly however, is its re-equipment with modern trams, forced upon the operation in order to meet accessibility legislation. With few options to soource suitably small trams a contract was signed with Modertrans of Poznan in Poland who had built single unit low-floor twin-bogie trams adapted from their articulated Moderus Gamma design for use in a number of Polish cities and as such are of interest in Germany due to their design and provenance.  A number of Gotha trams have been retained in reserve for use on special services.
