InTramCities with Gordon Stewart

Florence, Italy : 4th and 5th July, 2025  
The Tuscan capital, Florence, has undergone a major tramway expansion following the opening of the first section of "second-generation" tramway from the main railway station, Santa Maria Novella, to the Scandicci area to the south-west of the city in 2010. Lines to the major hospital at Careggi, and to the city's international airport followed in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Ideas of a tramway running close to the historic city centre failed to gain acceptance, so the plan is to route the tramway along the major inner ring road to destinations in east. The first part of the new route was opened to the public in the spring of 2025. Whilst a junction is in place for the further extension around the east of the city, trams are routed south from Piazza della Liberta to Piazza San Marco which is aroud 400 metres from the city's iconic cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiori. The difficulty in threading a tramway through the narrow streets of the city was overcome by building a long one-way loop along Via Camillo Cavour and Via Giorgio la Pira.

Note : For orientation purposes, the centre of the network is regarded as at Piazza della Stazione, between the two tram stops either side of the station (Valfonda and Alamanni).  This means that for photos on the Piazza San Marco section, trams heading towards the city centre from Liberta to the terminus at Piazza San Marco are shown as "outbound" from the central point at Piazza della Stazione (Santa Maria Novella).
