Database : Yugoslavia : River Danube
Established
at the end of 1918 in the sftermath of the First World War as the
Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, it formally became Yugoslavia in
1929. It survived until 1992 when it fractured into a number of
independent states. Carved out of a previously-independent Serbia
and parts the defeated Austro-Hungarian Empire, Yugoslavia became an
important strategic state on River Danube, linking parts of central
Europe to the Black Sea and also required its own shipping operations.
These
included passenger services as well as haulage. Vessels were
transferred to the ownership of the new state from the state-controlled
operators in Austria and Hungary.
