InTramCities with Gordon Stewart : Closed tramway Alignments
Berlin, Germany
Chaudseestrasse :
Closed on 26th August 2013 : photographed in 1983
This
short branch was a hangover from the earlier division of Berlin,
running north from Invalidenstrasse to close to the sector boundary at
what was formerly the Stadion der Weltjugend. Although not replaced by
a tram service, the route followed the U-Bahn, stations of which were
reopened for use after the reunification of Berlin

The
photo show a tram at Zinnowitzer Strasse tram stop in 1983 whilst this
part of the city was in the eastern sector. The view is northwards
along Chausseestrasse from the junction with Invalidenstrasse where
tram stops are now called Naturkundenmuseum. The tram (Tatra KT4D type)
sits alongside the closed off entrances to the Zinnowitzer Strasse
U-Bahn station which ran without stopping in East Berlin, with the
exception of the Friedrichstrasse checkpoint for visitors from West
Berlin in its journey from northern parts of West Berlin to southern
parts. The closure came in association with the extension of the
tramway to the left of the photo along Invalidenstrasse to the new
Berlin Hauptbahnhof (crossing the line of the former Berlin Wall)
shortly afterwards.
