Steamship "Oster" at Bergen, Norway on 19th June 2016

Oster was built in 1908 and was a passenger and goods ferry based at Bergen. She was taken over by the Norwegian Navy at the beginning of World War II and then transferred to the German Kriegsmarine on the defeat of Norway. She did not get back into service until 1956 having fallen into disrepair but once back in service she represented the last coal fired steamer in the region. That only lasted until 1964 when new owners converted her to diesel and made her a freight-only ship. An enthusiast's group purchased her in 1996 - and converted her back to steam - and for passenger use
