The
Leopoldina Railway operated an extensive network of lines in the state
of Rio de Janeiro, the eastern part of Minas Gerais and the southern
part of Espirito Santo. The British-owned company was created through
the amalgamaton of thirty-eight separate companies, any with different
track gauges and operating in difficult terrais, some using the rack
and pinion principle.
